| Christmas Beer, Christmas Cheer Friday 10th November, 2006 - 8:53am Copenhagen |
I've always been of the belief that all things Christmas should be kept under lock and key until December the 1st. I cringe when I hear the first Christmas Carol of year and it's only November. There is one exception that I will happily allow this year and that is Christmas beer!
In Danish, Christmas is called Jul. The introduction of the Christian word 'Christmas' failed miserably since the introduction of Christianity more than 1000 years ago into Denmark and to this day they prefer to use the more archaic term Jul (Yule) which refers to the more pagan traditions of celebrating the winter solstice. I do prefer this meaning to the one I am accustom too for the celebration of the Winter months is far better than any silly old man in red suit or any religious make believe.
Of course, Christmas or Jul isn't Christmas or Jul, without a silly old man in a red suit. In Denmark, a host of little pixies (called Nisser) come out to play in red pointy hats. They are good luck and will help make hard work easier, cure sick animals and promise a good harvest and give children presents. But don't be fooled by these little folk as there is a price to pay for good fortune. "Nisser have a tendency to misbehave if they don't get their way, and for generations Danish children have been pacifying them with bowls of risengrød or rice porridge hidden in the attic. In fact the only real proof of the nisser's existence is that somehow the porridge is gone the next morning!"* Hmm..that certainly sounds like Santa and Nisser are in cahoots with each other! Only difference is that Santa likes cookies!
So, where was I? Right, Christmas Beer = Jul Øl. Every year, on November 1st (J-Day) at exactly 8:59pm, the first Juløl is launched. I unfortunately missed it this year because basically, no-one told me, hmmph! However, since then, I have sampled some of these fine Jul brews and they weren't afraid of upping the alcohol content for the silly season that's for sure!
Here are some of the brews from the bigger breweries:
Tuborg**
Carlsberg** (could only find 2005!)
And with that, I shall wish you a Happy Friday, may you find the nearest Juløl and be merry. :)
** Warning: This link may contain the sound of Christmas Carols. Proceed with caution throughout November.

I completely agree. Something about the jump start for Christmas in Denmark rubs me the wrong way, especially being the only Jew for many many miles. But I love Jul Bryg. I drink many. I also love Schnappes and herring and I'm not adverse to all svin delicasies - but it gets to be too much. I filter Christmas until Dec 1 as well except for the good ol 7% beer. And thanks for your feedback on my scrollboxes. They're gone!
