Crossing the pond Tuesday, 10th October 2006 - 8:28pm Copenhagen
The Oresund Bridge

Last Sunday, I woke up and decided that I would go to Sweden! I still find it quite exhilarating that I can just take off in my car and travel to another country on a whim. If I were to drive 30 minutes from my home in Sydney, I would still umm, be in Sydney but in Copenhagen, I can drive 30 minutes and be half way crossing the bridge to Sweden. The Øresund Bridge connects Denmark and Sweden and is the longest bridge in Europe. It is part bridge and part tunnel that completes its journey through to Denmark via an artificial island. The bridge crossing was certainly an experience, albeit a tad on the expensive side, but certianly worth it.

Indy at Ikea in Sweden! So, and I'm not embarassed to admit it, one of my objectives of crossing over the pond was to go to Ikea in its home country. Ikea is an institution around the world. I don't think I've ever moved house without at least one visit to Ikea and so it's with all due respects that I must visit Ikea in its birthplace. A Dane probably wouldn't understand as I've been told "You do know there is an Ikea in Copenhagen?" and yes, I do know that but life just isn't complete without going to Ikea in Sweden. I might not have made it to Rome yet but I've been to Ikea in Sweden. Ok, so I may be over dramatising things and that may be because it was slightly a non event but I now feel comfortable in knowing that Ikea, whether it be in London or Sydney looks exactly like one in Sweden and I don't feel so gypped that the one in Sydney does not serve Swedish meatballs because neither does the one Malmö:) However, frozen Ikea meatballs (complete with lingonberry sauce) for dinner that night certainly sufficed.

After the Ikea expedition, I set out to find the acclaimmed Turning Torso which upon its completion, is the tallest building in Scandinavia. It's actually quite an impressive building and the surrounding area which is still under construction looks like it will become a nice funky modern place to live beside the harbour. The western harbour area was originally an industrial area and has been undergoing a major facelift. There is a wonderful stroll beside the sea with pontoons shooting out into the sea which I assume during the warmer months is used by swimmers for a dip in the sea. Upon further exploring, I was intrigued by music coming from the hilly parkside. As I approached one of the hills, I found a small entrance to which I found music playing from inside a crater formed in the hill. Speakers were set in the sides of the grassy crater and played music throughout the day. It was actually quite eerie at first as the place was a ghost town but I can see its potential in summer for being a great place to sit and chill.

I didn't have much time before the sun set, so I decided to head back to Copenhagen. I'm sure there is more to Malmö than I was able to explore. Another Sunday, perhaps.

As a proud meatball-eater (kebabs too, Jess) I can confirm that the Ikea in Sydney DOES in fact serve meatballs!

They also serve fluorescent red hotdogs that come out of the skin with a slight squeeze - lovely!

Are we talking Moore Park Ikea? They didn't serve it 2 years ago. Now, I have to go back to search for an Ikea in Sweden that serves meatballs!! My mission is not yet complete :)
