| Sunday Roller Stroll Sunday, 8th May, 2005 - 23:33pm London |
| | I've always enjoyed skating since I was little. I learnt to skate at Kingsgrove Roller Rink when I was youngster and then moved onto speed skating at Caringbah Skate plus when I was a teenager and then it was skating the back streets of Pyrmont and then Centennial park. This afternoon, I skated the streets of London and it was an absolute thrill. | |
There are a number of street skating events in London and I thought I'd start out with the Sunday Roller Stroll I arrived at the designated starting point at Hyde Park a bit early so I could practice my skating. I haven't skated in awhile so I needed to practice the 4th Commandment about "Stopping effectively" and I guess it's just like riding a bicycle. You don't forget. After a few short lengths of Hyde Park, I was ready to go. There was already a crowd of skaters starting to form. There were also a number of policemen on horses and I thought surely they aren't here to control the skate but about 10 minutes before the designated start time of the skate, the police blocked various skaters, cyclists and pedestrians to let Camilla Parker Bowles come through in her Royal Car and as she past, she gave the skaters her royal blessing for a good skate. Ok, so maybe she wasn't doing the royal wave for that exact reason and most likely it was just a co-incidence that she just happened to be passing by. It was cool nonetheless to see royalty even if it was Camilla!
After the royal passing, more and more people started to arrive with their wheels on ready to go. Then, a sound box on wheels and the marshalls arrived in their fluro vests. We were then given an introduction then we were away! There was probably about 100 or so skaters, mostly inline skaters and a handful of quad skaters (including me! yes, we are a dying breed!). We headed out of Hyde Park and into the streets of London! The marshalls were fantastic in controlling traffic which meant we were able to skate without the hassle of worrying about oncoming cars. We travelled through Belgravia to Chelsea then across the Thames to Battersea Park (not far from where I live) then back across the river through Chelsea then through West Brompton, then passing by the back of Harrods before arriving back at Hyde Park. Click here for the route of the skate. As we skated through, people came out of their houses to watch and others stopped in their tracks to take photos of the crowd of skaters whizzing through the streets.
I'm looking forward to my next skate now which is probably going to be this Friday night where the regular Friday night skate is doing the Circle Line (Tube) skate. Very exciting! There is a different route every week so it's definitely a fantastic way to see London. get some exercise and have fun at the same time! Oh and its free! Can't beat it!
Oooh, I've also got my eyes on the Paris and Barcelona skating trips! How cool would that be! |

I never learnt how to stop. To stop myself I just used cars, people... the pavement *G*. Looks like fun, Natalie!

You could probably use a car on the street skate. Plenty parked along the side of the road. Just don't go for the moving ones!
