| Cuba: The Malecon Friday 28th November, 2008 - 23:22pm London |
The Malecon is a 7 kilometre sea wall that stretches around coast of Havana and is a hub of activity for the local Cubans. By day the locals take a walk or sit by the wall or even fish and by night, revellers come out with their rum and instruments and party alongside the wall. All the time the sea breaks against the wall and can sometimes crash water up over the wall and onto the walkway and the road. Undisturbed by the raging waters, the locals find themselves a pocket of calm in which they stand and continue with their activity.
Notes on photo number 4: On 28th October each year, young children from all over Cuba throw flowers into the sea to honour Camilo Cienfuegos, a Cuban revolutionary whose plane plunged into the open sea on this day in 1958 and was never found.
