| The final leg of the journey Monday 18th September, 2006 - 23:50 Copenhagen |
One of the good things about my little roadtrip on the weekend was the discovery of a few places that were off the beaten track, well highway in this case. After not being too impressed with my choice of stopover in the Netherlands, I was pleased to randomly pick Bremen on the map and discover a wonderful little city. Not only was it a city known for Beck's beer and the Brother's Grimm fairy tale, the town musicians, but it had a fine display of gothic architecture, tiny colourful squished up houses in winding cobbled stone streets (Schnoor) and I certainly can't forget my interaction with ever so friendly german police (hehe, long story).
After leaving Bremen, it was back onto the autobahn to make my final leg of the journey. While approaching Hamburg, I had reached my first traffic jam since leaving London. I sat on the autobahn travelling at 10kmph for about 40 mins. That was the longest 40 mins of the whole journey. I amused myself by waving at the cars staring at the alien right-handed drive car :) The motorway then split in two with the heavy traffic continuing the direction I was heading. I quickly consulted TomTom to see if there was a better way and yes, I could drive through downtown Hamburg and we'd eventually catch up to the motorway later. Saved. I can't tell you how much I love TomTom, my road saviour!
Finally back to decent speed, I eventually reached the end of the motorway in Germany and this time passing into the next country was just a little bit different. TomTom's directions were "In 800m turn left and then take the ferry". Finally, I was able to take a ferry to Denmark! It was less than an hour crossing time to Denmark but it was a welcome break from being on the road. Reaching Denmark, it was straight onto the motorway. By this time, I think I was deprived of speaking to other human beings so I was easily amused by the signs along the side of the road saying "Fart Kontrol". The Danes try their best at being as eco-friendly as possible but saving the planet by restricting methane emissions from road users into the earth's atmosphere was maybe not the intent of the sign :) Hehe. I did manage to work out that they meant "Speed Control" due to roadworks in the area :) A short 1.5 hour drive and a few island hops later and I was finally home.
6 Countries, 1352kms, 2 days, one train, one ferry and one little mini cooper, that's quite an adventure! |
